Second release!
This is where we start pimping the mod and spreading the word,we
are happy with this release, having nixed all the more show-stopping
bugs that interfered with gameplay and performance, and now we have
plans for more a few more 'extra' features that will be added as
the project progresses.
In the background Phae and I are planning what we should put in
next as priority, and I am working on creating a solution for web-based
server listings and CVS use, which from what I can tell, is somewhat
overboard for what we may need. CVS is great, but the web-interfaces
for it still need much work to be done on them for grab-and-go projects
like this one.
We may just resort to putting up 'stable' CVS snapshots on the
website, along with instructions on how to update your CVS tree
remotely, and have a grab-and-go snapshot for other modders who
are looking for source code to learn from, or incorporate into their
own mods.
This also makes me feel, after seeing a trend in the Q3A mod community,
that I have to remind people just what OPEN SOURCE means - it doesn't
mean 'you get free code and free lunch' it means 'share and share
alike' - If you use somebody else's source code that's been released
under any sort of 'open source' agreement, you are -obligated- to
release the source of whatever it is that you use that code in as
well. Even if it is just one little subroutine.
This could also be said for the much of the Q3A mod community at
large. You didn't write Q3A, you are basing your mods off the source
code that was released by Id software to the general public - they
don't have to do this. Unless you write an entire source tree from
scratch, and never once use any of ID's original Q3A SDK - you should
think twice before somebody asks if they can 'see inside' and you
tell them 'no' - Id software never had to release the source for
Q1, QW, Q2, or Q3A, they did it so YOU could have fun with -their-
game code. -their- hard work. They are passing the torch off to
you, don't be a lamer, give back to the community.
Finding source for QW mods was easy, finding source for Q2 mods
was almost as easy, but not quite, and then come the Q3A days -
when less than half of the mods seem to have anything to do with
releasing source, maybe sometimes claiming only if people -ask- for
it? (Do any of us really buy that? Why make people ask for it? To
keep count? Egovalue, maybe?)
Did you have to -ask- Carmack and Co. for their code? Did you send
him an Email saying 'can I have your SDK so I can learn the code
and make my own mod?' I doubt it, But If I'm wrong, feel free to
contact me and show me proof otherwise. :)
